7:30 Wed August 21st Paramount Theatre
Singer-songwriter Dar Williams has produced more than a dozen albums since 1990, sung with Joan Baez, John Prine, Cliff Eberhart, the Indigo Girls, Loudin Wainwright III, and recorded and toured with Lucy Kaplansky and Richard Shindell as part of the trio Cry Cry Cry. Her latest album, “In the Time of the Gods,” is inspired by ancient mythology and includes an “epic biker song” about the Greek god Hermes. Be prepared for similar surprises.
“I don’t really have the vocabulary to do her work justice, so I’ll just say that her songs are beautiful. Some are like finely crafted short stories. They are, variously, devastatingly moving, tenderly funny, subtle without being in any way inaccessible, and utterly fresh—not a cliché or a clunker in her entire songbook.”–Hendrik Hertzberg, The New Yorker
“Like an elegant gene splice of Shawn Colvin and Loudon Wainwright III, Williams can easily triangulate the emotional distance between breezy humor, somber reflection and crystalline heartbreak, on subjects as intimate as family and love and as broad as culture and politics.”–Brian Baker, Citybeat (Cincinnati)
“Williams not only casts her spell through her magical mirror to the plagues of modern society, she also weaves magical tales between each song, making us laugh and sigh at the way she sees the world around her. It’s a beautiful world of joy and pain filtered through humor and hopefulness.”–Diana Nollen, Hooplanow.com (Iowa)
